Recently Peter and I brought Patriot on his first family vacation. My parents were visiting from Texas so the 5 of us hopped on a plane over to Penang, Malaysia. During our trip we were able to stay in two nights at a beautiful boutique hotel in Penang, The Edison George Town.
Peter and I visited Penang two years ago. Check out my Penang travel guide and foodie guide here (the foodie guide will be updated with this year’s recommendations soon!). At that time, The Edison George Town wasn’t the updated, gorgeous hotel it is today so I’m really glad we found it this time around.
The Edison George Town Review
The Edison is housed in a historic mansion built in 1906 for the tycoon, Yeo Wee Gark. During WWI, the Japanese occupied Penang and the mansion, which was used as an administrative centre. It has since been transformed into a stunning hotel, restoring many of the opulent features you’d expect for a Colonial mansion in Penang like a bright open courtyard.
Staying a few nights in my new favorite hotel, a former Hokkien tycoon’s mansion built in the early 20th Century. #penang #malaysia #boutiquehotel #georgetown #colonialarchitecture #tropicalarchitecture #courtyard #courtyardhouse #southeastasia #conservation #edisonhotel @premolona @grremolo @theedisongeorgetown
And a few features you wouldn’t expect, like the colorful lounge open 24/7 and the refreshing outdoor swimming pool (where Pate had his first ever swim!).
Lounge access is included in your stay and offers water, fresh juice, coffee and snacks. There is also a happy hour every evening with free flow wine, cheese and crackers. It was so nice to start off our evening with a glass of wine, head out to dinner, then hang out and relax in the lounge.
Pate, Pete, and I had a room upstairs towards the middle of the mansion. The room was beautiful and it was spacious enough for all of our things (Pate does not pack light). There was a nice, comfy king sized bed for the three of us to share. Patriot loved staring at the black and grey patterned headboard.
The room was dark, which was perfect for Pate to get a good night’s sleep, but if you’re looking for a bright window to let in that Penang sunshine, you won’t find it here unfortunately. The only window was in the bathroom and had frosted glass so you couldn’t see outside. This didn’t bother us since we spent most of our time at the hotel hanging out in the lounge or by the pool.
I did read on other online reviews for the hotel that the noise from Red Garden (a popular eatery across the street) can be really loud and disturbing. Our room was towards the middle of the mansion so we didn’t hear much noise at all. The hotel provides earplugs, but I didn’t need them on this trip. I am normally a very light sleeper but because our room wasn’t too close to the front of the hotel + I can fall asleep at nearly the drop of a hat thanks to Patriot, the noise wasn’t an issue.
For our next visit, I would definitely book ahead to ensure our rooms were towards the back of the hotel.
Incredible. We received excellent, personal service and loved that we got to know the staff (and vice versa!). Everyone on the Edison staff was friendly, super helpful and proactive. They were great at anticipating our needs whenever we were hanging out in the lounge, by the pool, or having breakfast.
I am currently breastfeeding Patriot but I usually pump twice a day to build up a milk stash for when I return to work. During our trip to Penang, I kept up my normal pumping routine and we gave Pate the pumped milk bottles when we would go out to dinner. The hotel staff very kindly stored my pumped milk in the hotel fridge and would also provide large bowls of hot water for me to ensure that my pump parts were cleaned safely and properly.
The Edison George Town is walking distance from many historical attractions and restaurant options. We rented a car during our stay and did do some driving, but we also spent a few afternoons walking from the hotel and exploring the town.
The Edison George Town is an excellent choice for families planning a trip to Penang. Note that the hotel does not have a lift. We carried Pate in his stroller up the stairs pretty easily, but you may want to request a room on the ground floor.
Traveling as a family (especially with a newborn!) can be stressful but he staff at The Edison were very accommodating to our needs and I do think the hotel is well suited for families. I’m especially thankful that they helped remove the stress of pumping while on vacation.
We’ve already started planning a return trip to Penang and to the Edison for next year!
