While at times you may feel like you’ve been pregnant forever, pregnancy is a special and fleeting time and maternity photos are a beautiful way to capture this precious period.

5 Tips for Taking Maternity Photos
While there’s never a bad time to take maternity photos, I recommend booking your photo shoot for around 32-36 weeks. At this stage in the pregnancy expecting mamas usually have a beautiful belly to show off without feeling too uncomfortable or exhausted to pose for photos. There are a few exceptions to this – those expecting twins, moms who have health conditions that may restrict them later in pregnancy, or women who are showing earlier in their pregnancy because they’re having their third or fourth child, may want to take their photos earlier in their pregnancy.
2. Focus on Connections
Include your spouse or partner or children in the photoshoot. They may be hesitant at first but maternity photos are about capturing a once in a lifetime period of your life.
Regardless of if you’re expecting your first or your fourth child, every pregnancy is unique. You’ll want to look back at how you shared this experience as a family.
If possible, it’s worth treating yourself to a professional hair and makeup session. You can still have a natural look in your photographs, but often what looks natural and beautiful in person, looks very different in photographs. A professional makeup artist will know how to adjust your makeup depending on your style and the lighting that will be used during the shoot. It also removes some stress from the day and gives you an opportunity to relax and pamper yourself before the shoot.
Having a fresh coat of nail polish on will also make a huge difference in your photographs. You can have this done professionally or DIY but either way you’ll want clean, tidy nails for all those close up shots of you embracing your belly.
4. Feel Your Best
Many moms ask me for tips to reduce the appearance of bloating or swelling in photos. For me, it’s less about how you look when you’re bloated or puffy and much more about how you feel. If you’re uncomfortable because of bloating or swelling, that will show in your photographs.
For those concerned about bloating or swelling you can make a couple of small dietary changes in the day or two before your photoshoot. Cut back on salt and drink lots of water. Try to get a good night’s rest the night before or take a nap before your shoot if it’s not until later in the day. These adjustments can also have you feeling more confident and comfortable — which will make a noticeable difference in your photos.
5. What to Wear
Choose maternity wear that captures your style without being too restrictive or uncomfortable. You want to look and feel natural during the shoot. If bold glamorous style is what makes you feel your most confident— go for it! If you prefer a more bohemian, natural style— work that flowy dress.
Ask your photographer if she has a studio wardrobe that you can select from. This will save you a bit of stress and money and chances are your photographer will already know of great poses and options for the pieces in her wardrobe.
