Somehow in just his first 4 months of existence, Baby P has already made his way around the world, including two trips to Rwanda. What a lucky bump (and a lucky soon-to-be mom)!
The first trip was when I also visited Nairobi and as you may remember from my pregnancy reveal, I was not feeling well at all so I was a bit worried about flying and mostly wanted to be at home with Peter talking about all things baby.
Instead, with Peter also out of town on a site visit for work, Bump and I hopped on a plane to Kigali and luckily, arriving to these Rwandan skies and Ethiopian food made things much better!
This trip, like most, was full of meetings but I snuck in a quick visit to my beloved Umutima for a very early, secret baby shopping trip. Umutima is an incredible line of products designed and crafted by the artisans at the Nyamirambo Women’s Center.
The Women’s Center helps disadvantaged women in Rwanda to learn new skills and gain better employment. You’ll see the Umutima products in different shops in Kigali, but you can also visit them in Nyamirambo.
Nyamirambo Women’s Center
KN 7 Avenue (on the corner with KN 132 Street)
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm
(except for Umuganda Saturday, 12pm to 5pm)
My next trip to Rwanda was last month for the Class of 2016 Akilah Institute graduation! We graduated our largest class yet — 84 dedicated and driven women.
It was my first time attending an Akilah graduation and despite a massive rainstorm rolling in mid-way through the ceremony, the event went off without a hitch. It was a beautiful celebration and while the Akilah ladies were the center of attention that day, I also loved the performance by the Burundian drummers at the end of the ceremony.
It was great being back in Kigali over the first few months of my pregnancy because I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to go back again now that I’m further along and Baby P will be here soon! Next trip I think I’ll need Baby P and Peter to finally join me!
