Cebu is known for its beautiful waters, snorkeling, and diving. Considering flights to Mactan Island are so convenient (you can fly direct from Hong Kong in about 2.5 hours), I wasn’t sure what to expect about the quality of the water. Many equally convenient beaches in other parts of Southeast Asia tend to be overrun with tourists, dirty and not well protected.
So I was more than pleasantly surprised when we set off on our island hopping in Cebu and had this as our view.
We used Aqua Dive Cebu and were very happy with their services. We had a large, well-manned boat with guides who spoke English for Peter and me and Japanese for the rest of our island hopping group. They offer island hopping/snorkeling tours and diving tours.

After being picked up at our hotel, we were driven to the local pier.
Our first stop was a protected reef with wonderfully clear water. We saw some big fish here. Much larger than I was expecting to see and I was getting pretty GoPro-happy chasing the fish around in the open waters.
There were other boats stopped here as well but it never felt crowded at all. Our guide explained that this area used to be heavily fished, but now the locals see the benefits to protecting the coral and the fish (i.e. fin-flapping tourists like me will come).
Once we had our fill, our boat took off once again and headed to Nalusuan Island Resort.
This remote resort offers rustic accommodation, a waterside restaurant, and a private reef. Peter and I were the first to head down the dock to the restaurant for lunch and were met with a Filipino feast.
We had grilled meats, fresh seafood, fruits, coconuts and beer. Feeling obliged to wait a bit after lunch before jumping back in the water, we took a tour around the small island.
If you are looking for a more peaceful resort, away from Mactan Island, Nalusuan offers a very affordable option.
Before long it was time for us to get back in the water. We snorkeled until we were tired then made our way back to the boat to return home.
