Mull (Part II) & the Digital Detox

my Aggie ring looks great on Mull

While I’m sure most people don’t get this impression of me immediately (let’s be honest here, I’m not exactly the most rugged or sporty person per se), I love the outdoors and long hikes and walks, especially when traveling.

Although I was unsuccessful getting our group in Mull out for a pony trek (sadly the treks end in September) I was eager to grab my camera and head out for walks around the island.

I think I would have really lost my mind had I been cooped up inside the house because of rain all weekend. Honestly I was already going a bit stir crazy indoors and coping with a digital detox (no cell service, limited internet).

I normally deal with not having cell phone service really well. In fact this is the only time I’ve been abroad and had a completely functional cell phone. When I was living in Ireland I was mobile-free and in Hong Kong I had a crappy pay-as-you-go flip phone.

During one of our walks I was ticking off a list of things I needed to do when I got back to Edinburgh and Ruaridh stopped me–this was the time not to worry about emails and visas and packing. Sometimes I feel like having less to do actually makes me stress more.

Everyone finds peace and relaxation in different ways. Sandy and Ruaridh

My musts for the weekend?

Taking lots of photographs, going for a run, and being out in the sun.

Lucky for me, Mull provided amazing views for all three of those activities. I almost didn’t even notice I didn’t have cell phone service.

Almost.

Have you ever gone through a Digital Detox? What’s your ideal way to relax on holiday?

  • It is also hard for me to relax because I always feel like I “should” be doing something! Being forced to digitally detox (especially in such a beautiful place) must have been a breath of fresh air 🙂 I have been trying to unplug at least one day over the weekend and it has actually made me feel less stressed, so mission accomplished! Loving your blog!

    • Doing a one day detox sounds like a great idea! A good way to ease yourself into relying less on your smartphone or computer. I should try that!
